In the early spring of 2010 our “Feeding Hungry Little Tummies”
project expanded from just collecting expired coupons for 
military personnel, on overseas military bases, to also sharing
non-expired coupons with those locally who are struggling to
buy just the basics for their family.


HOW OKLAHOMA AMERICAN NEWS (OAVN) IS DIFFERENT:

• OAVN is dedicated to finding ways to help people using items
  that others don’t want*. (That Sunday coupon insert --kept out
  of the trash or recycle bins-- might have a coupon for $.50 
  toilet paper or $.25 off on a can of chili. Coupons can be a 
  real blessing in stretching grocery money when finances are 
  tight.) Many Veterans don't want a "hand out" but love this "hand up".
• Our Dot’s Christmas Store project provides gifts for hospitalized 
  Veterans at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Hospital, who cannot
  leave their bed to shop for loved ones. Receiving a gift to give
  their sweetheart or their child (brought right to their hospital
  bed) warms many a heart and brings a grateful smile. Many
  Veterans, so used to giving, try to pay for the gift but we assure
  them they have already paid "in full". OAVN gladly accepts “re-gifts”
  (those items you may have received from a co-worker or great-aunt 
  that, while nice gifts, are simply not to your taste) for Dot's Christmas
  Store.
• OAVN continues to help the children of needy families at Christmas
  as this is what our Vets want us to do. The small town where this 
  years families live is located outside the metro area. They don't
  have access to the many wonderful organizations we have in and
  around Tulsa. The school ad provided us with their sizes in the
  hopes can get the kids some warm clothes and shoes. We also asked
  the kids what their “dream” gift would be and we hope to get them
  the dress or the baseball, scooter or bike they asked for. 
  “Re-gifts” are most welcome. 
• OAVN has no paid officers; only volunteers (because we believe that
  what is donated is meant to go toward helping veterans, their 
  families and others in need.)

*We try to be creative in figuring out what we can use to help others,
instead of calling people to ask for donations. We are always grateful
when opening envelopes of coupons to find that one has a few dollars
to help with the mailing costs to get the boxes of coupons to our overseas
military bases.

passing  along the information it will reach someone who could use a little help
from us.
